Get a Real Job

get-a-real-job

For a majority of my life I have heard some variation of the phrase “get a real job” from the people around me once they heard that I was an entrepreneur and a musician. This little diddy comes in all different flavors, so don’t be surprised if you find it hiding behind the pseudonym of “you need something to fall back on” as well. It’s pretty much one in the same.

I always wear the fact that I don’t have a “real job” like everyone else around me as a badge of honor. The funny thing (funny meaning ironic) is that this, for a lack of a better term, fake job that I have is an awful lot of real work. Newsflash: It’s All Your Fault!

its-all-your-fault

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that you can do anything you want to do, be anything you want to be and have anything you want to have. I don’t mean to squash all of the excuses that help you sleep at night, but here are the facts. It’s not because you are too young, too old, too tall or too short. It’s not because of who you know or who you don’t know. It’s not because of where you live. It’s not your parents fault (even if they are nuts). It’s not even because you aren’t good enough. It is because of one of two reasons:

  1. You don’t really want it as much as you say you do
  2. You are too lazy to go and get it (see reason #1)

That’s right. It’s time to strap on your big boy (or girl) pants and start taking full responsibility for who you are and where you are in your life. If you do not have the success that you want and are not moving closer and closer to it every day, then you are not fully committed to the outcome. When I say commitment, I’m talking about willing to move heaven and earth to get it. Where hearing “no” just makes you want it more. Where you’ve pictured yourself doing it so many times that you start to believe that you’ve actually done it. That’s committment.
